Harley Earl Marlar
born April 18, 1926, Kentucky,
died December 08, 2009, Heiskell, Tennessee.
A tribute to Harley Earl Marlar by his grandson Freddy Marlar-
He lived a long and full life... I'm proud to be his grandson... He was a great man...
Papaw achieved where others failed. In the 1960s he became the "Chief Electrical Inspector" for the City of Knoxville but Bluegrass Music was always his passion. He became the "Master of the Mandolin" and organized the band "Bluegrass Specials", even built "The Building" on a piece of his 36 acre farm to pick-play music. For years I remember Tammy and I listening to him and dad "Pick 'n' Grin".
He was a great carpenter, building and selling several houses during his life along with building his own home on his farm in Heiskell. Papaw also had a sawmill where he supplied crate material to Plastiline in Powell, Tennessee. In visiting Papaw as a child I remember all the head of cattle and horses he had, as for years he raised both. He was also developer, owner, and operator of the only locally owned television station in Heiskell, "WFEM Channel 12" and was a member of the "International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW)" and the "Musicians Local".
He was "Dad" and "Papaw" to his children and grandchildren.
For this (in my eyes) would be the GREATEST accomplishment by the man who never seemed to quit.
